Wicks Reform

On June 4 The Business Council joined with the Associated Building Contractors for a press conference on changes to the Wicks Law. The media event focused on limiting the prequalifications of contractors requirement, repeal and relief from the project labor agreements and apprenticeship requirements, and bidding thresholds. Media covering the event included Gannett News Service, the Buffalo News, and Capital News 9 in Albany.

Paid Family Leave

The Business Council continues its push against the that proposed state-mandated paid family leave legislation would increase costs for businesses, making it difficult to create and retain new jobs. An op ed piece in the Buffalo News suggests the bill is too costly and the state should focus on federal action. Larry Brinker of the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce spoke with News Channel 34 in Binghamton.

In the News ...

Governor Paterson recently named Robert Wilmers chair of the Empire State Development Corporation. Kenneth Adams, President and CEO, The Business Council feels Mr. Wilmers is an excellent choice to create economic growth.

The Otsego County Chamber and Otsego County Economic Development fear Otsego County is in danger of losing critical economic development tools -- local industrial development agencies.

The New York State Department of Labor has issued guidelines, effective May 7, 2008, implementing the new leave requirement that employers with 20 or more employees provide staff members who work at least 20 hours per week with time off to donate blood.

The Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce is troubled by the closing of the Callaway Golf Plant in Johnstown and continues to express concern of the high cost of doing business in New York State. Click here for additional coverage.

Business Council President and CEO Kenneth Adams recently testified at a Senate hearing on preparing today's youth for the workplace.

The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County is developing plans for a summit to be held in October which will focus on issues and challenges facing businesses and educators regarding workforce preparedness.

And the Buffalo Niagara Partnership is working with local businesses to attract young professionals.

The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County has been recognized by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives for excellence in marketing and communication.

Congratulations to Cathy Hyland, New Paltz Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Jodie Perry, Greece Chamber of Commerce. Each received a scholarship from CANYS and the American Chamber of Commerce Executives to attend the 2008 ACCE Annual Convention in Pittsburgh.
