CANYS Membership Directors Teleconference August 7

The next Membership Directors Teleconference will be held on Tuesday, August 7th at 10:00 am. Many of our membership directors are attending ACCE’s Chamber Meeting of Choice national convention in Sacramento the week before this call. On the teleconference, we will share some of the tips and suggestions learned from conference breakout sessions like “One Person Sales Department,” “Selling Tiered Dues,” “Individual Sales Planning,” and “Membership—Making the Sale.”

If you’re heading to Sacramento, this teleconference is a great way to reinforce the new ideas you’ve learned, and pick up notes from breakout sessions you missed. If you can’t make the ACCE convention this year, here’s your opportunity to see what you’re missing—and why you should book your trip now for next year’s convention.

To participate in the teleconference—open to paid membership directors and chamber chief execs—dial 866-866-2244 and enter code 1530969. Take advantage of this special CANYS member benefit!

Legislative session wrap-up

With strong advocacy by The Business Council, chambers and other allies, the Legislature ended its regular session by extending the Power for Jobs program for another year, and by laying aside a number of anti-employer bills, including paid family leave, pre-judgment interest in tort claims, and restrictions on pharmaceutical marketing.

A full wrap-up, listing a number of bills and their outcomes is available HERE.

Additional details on the end of the regular session are available HERE.

A warning about eUSA Chamber

Nancy Ploeger, Chairwoman of CANYS, wants all members to be aware of a new membership scam that has affected the Manhattan Chamber. Jason Elliott and eUSA Chamber Corp have been calling businesses in the New York City area, trying to sell memberships and claiming to be working with the local chamber (Manhattan, Staten Island, etc.). Online, eUSA Chamber bills itself as “the first and only promotional web directory that facilitates communication with a national database of U.S. businesses.”

eUSA Chamber is not working with these local chambers, and has been notified to stop using the chambers' names. Memberships of both chambers have been notified about this scam, and Nancy wanted to alert all CANYS members to the possibility of this situation popping up in other areas. The website of the organization is www.usaechamber.com/.

U.S. Chamber's Eastern Region Government Affairs Conference

The U.S. Chamber is well on its way to planning the fifth annual Eastern Region Government Affairs Conference, to be held this year at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, MA (www.sonesta.com/boston/) on September 26-28, 2007.

The event will begin with a mid-afternoon bonus session and an evening reception on Wednesday, and conclude at lunchtime on Friday. For more information or to register, you can access the conference website (www.uschamber.com/governmentaffairs) or contact James DeChene or Geoff O'Hara at (401) 831-8885.

Congratulations to Sandy Parker, president and CEO of the Rochester Business Alliance, who received the Honoring Excellence Award from the Buffalo Niagara Partnership in June. She accepted the award on behalf of the RBA for its work on Unshackle Upstate, a coalition founded in 2006 by both organizations to seek legislative relief from a series of state orders that hinder economic revival, causing high business costs and impaired job growth.

The Business Marketing Association of the Hudson Valley recently honored Charlie North of the Poughkeepsie Area Chamber, Ward Todd of the Ulster County Chamber, Joyce Minard of the New Paltz Chamber and Ann Meagher of the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber for promoting marketing opportunities and strategies to their members.

Congratulations to Al Samuels of the Rockland Business Association, who has been elected to the Board of Directors of Volumetric Fund, the only mutual fund headquartered in Rockland County.

Congratulations to the Orange County Chamber for winning an ACCE ACE award—the Award for Communications Excellence. The chamber won for its promotional video—the one shown at “CANYS Night at the Movies” at the 2007 Legislative and Leadership Conference in January.
