Updates and details for New York Day in Washington, May 9-10

As planed, our partner hotel, the Wyndham Washington DC, has just completed its conversion into a Westin hotel. This comes with facility renovations and other improvements we’ll get to enjoy during our stay on Wednesday, May 9th. All room confirmations remain the same—just the name on the outside of the hotel has changed. Please make a note that you’re looking for the Westin Washington DC City Center at 1400 M Street NW.

On Wednesday, May 9, the New York Legislative Reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. in B-338 Rayburn House Office Building. Bring your business cards to meet and mingle with Members and staff of New York’s Congressional delegation, along with fellow business leaders from around the state.

On Thursday, May 10, our Congressional Breakfast and Briefing hosted by Senator Charles Schumer begins at 8:00 a.m. sharp in 325 Russell Senate Office Building. Both of New York’s Senators, Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton, will address our group on current legislation being debated on the Senate floor. Governor Spitzer’s Washington representative and some of New York’s House Representatives will also give remarks.

Please note that security measures on Capitol Hill remain high. Be prepared by allowing extra time to get through security at the building entrances, and by leaving home any items that wouldn’t clear security screening.

Special thanks to the New York Day in Washington planning committee: Garry Douglas (Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber), Deb Warner (Greater Syracuse Chamber), Peter Aust, (The Chamber of Southern Saratoga Co.), Nancy Ploeger (Manhattan Chamber), and Todd Shimkus (Adirondack Regional Chamber). The team at the Greater Syracuse Chamber—Deb Warner and Stephanie Roehm—have outdone themselves again with handling the top-notch Legislative Reception on Wednesday evening. CANYS is grateful!

$1000 scholarship to Institute - deadline extended to May 14

The CANYS Board has extended the deadline to apply for the $1000 scholarship for a chamber executive or staff member to attend Institute.

The Institute for Organizational Management of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is looking for new students. The Institute curriculum is a four-year course of study designed by experts in association, chamber, and non-profit management. Participants take six required core courses each year with the same group of colleagues, creating a learning group that builds upon previous classes. In addition, participants also choose three electives each year to meet their personal objectives and boost their careers.

Northeast Institute is held at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, July 29 through August 2, 2007 For more information, go to www.uschamber.com/institute. The early enrollment deadline for Northeast Institute is June 5, 2007.

CANYS Membership Survey

Under the leadership of CANYS Chair Nancy Ploeger, we are taking a quick survey of our CANYS members to find out which chambers have initiatives in the areas of WMBE Certification; which chambers have any type of global initiative; and which chambers work with other chambers in their region. About a third of CANYS members have already participated, but we need to get that number to over half! Click HERE to take the very short—but important—survey.
