Empire State Development and homeland security . . .
Has your chamber helped businesses prepare for threats to homeland
security? Do you know what types of funding sources, grants and
government contracts are available for businesses in technology
and security-related industries? Could you do more to make sure
your community is prepared? Empire State Development is looking
to partner with chambers of commerce and assist in a number of ways.
For a brief overview of potential partnerships with ESD, see a presentation
given to The Business Council in December HERE.
For more information or to follow up, please contact Fred

Welcome to CANYS, Ticonderoga Area Chamber . . .
The CANYS Board of Directors would like to wish a warm welcome
to the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce! If
you’re not familiar with the chamber, Ticonderoga is a town
in Essex county, in northeastern New York. The town sits at the
north outlet of Lake George where it drains into Lake Champlain.
The name “Ticonderoga” comes from the Iroquois word
cheonderoga meaning "between two waters," or
"where the waters meet." The town's economy is geared
to year-round tourism, and the paper and pulp industry is also important.
The chamber helps draw the thousands of people who come to enjoy
the lakes and mountains and participate in the unique Fourth of
July celebration, arts and crafts shows, carnivals, Americade Motorcycle
Rally, and fishing tournaments, among other things. To learn more,
or to send a note of congratulations on behalf of your chamber,
e-mail Ticonderoga’s president, Debra Malaney
at chamber@ticonderogany.com.
Welcome to CANYS, Mount Vernon Chamber . . .
CANYS Directors would also like to extend a hearty congratulations
to another new member, the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce!
Mount Vernon is a city in Westchester County, just outside of New
York City. The city just celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003.
The chamber’s basic mission is to promote, develop, and strengthen
the economic base of its members and community. Its programs and
projects are designed to build pride in the community, improve and
expand the flow of commerce and information, and contribute to the
overall quality of life for those who live and work there. The chamber
helps maintain a viable marketplace and well trained work force.
To learn more, or to send a note of congratulations on behalf of
your chamber, e-mail Mount Vernon’s president, Cloey
Sepe at mvny.coc@verizon.net.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has named the Brooklyn Chamber
of Commerce a Workforce Innovation Network partner.
Workforce Innovation Networks is a national partnership
that works with employer organizations on the cutting-edge of workforce
development to meet the needs of their member firms for employees
at the entry-level and above. The designation comes with a two-year
grant of $130,000 to provide targeted training and improve the hiring
and promotion of workers with multiple barriers to successful employment.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration
is currently funding the effort. The Brooklyn program will seek
to expand its ability and capacity to offer more employer services;
collect and analyze local labor market information with a focus
on Brooklyn; and institute a workforce academy model. Congratulations!

County Chamber of Commerce, will leave that job in February
to become the Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Fresno Area
