Community development grants available . . .

State Senator John Bonacic has announced that over $52 million in funding is being made available through the Governor’s Office of Small Cities to assist localities seeking funding for various community development projects. Senator Bonacic is one of three members of the Governor’s Small Cities Advisory Committee which helps set the funding priorities for the Small Cities Program.

The funding is available for various housing, economic development, public facilities, and mixed-use projects that will improve the overall quality of life for residences of towns, villages, and cities with populations of fewer than 50,000 and cities with populations less than 200,000. The maximum award for a single purpose grant is $400,000 for towns, villages, and cities and $600,000 for counties and joint applications.

Applications for the 2004 Competitive Round grant funding can be obtained by calling Senator Bonacic’s office at (845) 255-9656. Applications are due by April 5, 2004.

Aust, D'Ambrosio take leadership positions . . .

At the Board meeting of January 20th, two CANYS board members stepped up to serve the organization in leadership roles. Peter Aust of the Southern Saratoga County Chamber has been elected Vice Chairman, and John D’Ambrosio of the Orange County Chamber has been elected Secretary/Treasurer. Both positions are one-year terms. Congratulations to both gentlemen, and thanks for your service to the greater chamber community.

Chamber financial management 101 . . .

Calling all chamber leadership: CANYS and ACCE are teaming up to bring you a one-day seminar that could save your job… and your chamber! Plan to be in Syracuse on Wednesday, April 14th for ACCE’s Regional Education Seminar on chamber financial management.

More chamber executives lose their jobs due to poor financial management skills than any other reason. Directing the chamber’s financial operation, reading financial statements, and presenting those statements to the board are essential elements of the job. Budgeting shouldn’t be a time-consuming, annual exercise the whole staff dreads and the board finds confusing and frustrating.

Join Ed McMillan, CPA, CAE, for this full-day seminar, as he leads you through the practical and critical components of successful chamber financial management. The cost of registration is for a full-day (9:00 am–4:00 pm) seminar and includes continental breakfast, networking lunch and course notebook. Participants will also earn 3 credits towards their CCE. Registration is $179 for ACCE and/or CANYS members, and $229 for non-members. Leave the money in your budget and the time on your calendar to make sure your chamber gets the financial skills it needs! (Watch for registration information coming soon.)

Recognize your members for supporting our troops . . .

The Global War on Terror has placed increasing demands on continuous mobilization of National Guardsmen and Reservists. As a result, more employers are being impacted by the war on terrorism and the on-going military operations in Iraq as employee citizen-soldiers are called to duty.

The Secretary of Defense is looking to honor those businesses going above and beyond to support their employees on active duty with the 2004 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The nomination process is now open to anyone who has knowledge of an employer that is deserving of this prestigious national award. Nominations will be accepted at the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve) web site until March 15, 2004.

This is an excellent opportunity for your chamber members to gain national recognition for their patriotic support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Visit https://www.esgr.org/employers2/programs.asp?c=FAP2004main.asp for more information and to nominate one of your members!

Tell us about it . . .

The Business Council would like to know if your chamber has taken a formal position on the DestiNY USA project. Please send your feedback to cathy.jimenez@bcnys.org.
