Last chance for CANYS luncheon next Friday . . .

Make sure you’re signed up for the CANYS Luncheon in conjunction with The Business Council’s Annual Meeting! New York State Insurance Superintendent Greg Serio will be the keynote speaker at the CANYS Luncheon on Friday, September 19th at the Sagamore in Bolton Landing. Many chambers have requested a session with Mr. Serio, so here’s your chance to get the latest updates on sole proprietor health coverage, Association Health Plans, workers’ compensation, and any other issues on your mind. You will also hear how chambers can maximize the relationships and resources of their local educational institutions, from SUNY administrators and your fellow chamber executives. And you will have the chance to network with representatives from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The CANYS Luncheon will be held from Noon – 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 19th. Need another registration form? Click HERE.

Chamber Week, September 14-20 . . .

Celebration is almost underway for Chamber Week 2003, September 14-20. Still looking for ideas to observe Chamber Week? The Orange County Chamber of Commerce is turning the tables on its members at the monthly breakfast meeting next week. "The Chamber View: Hearing It From You" will be the topic for the event. A panel of six Chamber members will briefly review key Chamber areas and the program will then be turned over to the audience for questions and comments, all of which will be recorded for future consideration. If you would like more ideas on how you can highlight the great work of your chamber during Chamber Week 2003, please contact maggie.moree@bcnys.org.

Update on proposed FCC faxing rules . . .

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce continues to fight against proposed regulations from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that would require businesses and nonprofits to obtain written consent from their customers and members before sending faxes advertising goods, services, and memberships. The U.S. Chamber and several other organizations recently filed a petition for reconsideration of the rule, saying it is “exceptionally burdensome to businesses and consumers.” A stay order currently in effect delays implementation of this rule to January 1, 2005. The order suggests that its purpose is to give people time to comply with the new regulations and get written consent of each recipient before any commercial faxes are transmitted -- including those with whom the organization has a “prior business relationship.”

As we monitor the developments with the new rules, you may want to begin preparing to obtain signed, written consent from each of your members. Planning for the rule change now will allow you to have a smooth transition in January of 2005, should the rule stand. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has some materials that may assist you, including a draft model consent form. These items can be found at www.uschamber.com/government/issues/technology/fcc_fax.

Study up with “Engage New York” . . .

The Business Council is developing a new initiative to unite New York's business community in an ongoing effort to sustain public-school education reform in New York. The project is called “Engage New York.” Its goal is to give business leaders information that can help them influence the debate on education reform around a common standards-based improvement agenda. Newly developed seminars highlight four key goals for education that businesses should understand and support: embracing higher standards; pursuing and recognizing school improvement; enhancing teacher quality; and increasing schools’ focus on math, science, and technology. The seminars also focus on why high academic standards in public schools are important to businesses across the state. If you or your board members would like to participate in a regional seminar, contact Margarita Mayo at margarita.mayo@bcnys.org, or visit www.bcnys.org/inside/educcom.htm.

Finding new “cheese” . . .

Dear Chamber Presidents: We wish to thank you for your avid participation in the “Cheese” skit at the recent CANYS meeting in Glens Falls. We trust you have been able to find new cheese by addressing those things that have kept you from searching in the maze. Remember what Haw said, “It is safer to search in the maze than to remain in a cheeseless situation.”

Our real focus at Teams On Purpose is working within organizations to fundamentally change how their people interact. We use seminars as a marketing tool to find new cheese. You can benefit from this. If you can put us in front of decision makers that are looking to create an energized staff, then we can be very flexible with our fees.

Also, please consider us for your next retreat or workshop. We can do an energizing kick-off or facilitate the whole event.

Sincerely, Kay & Bob Walter
