Association Health Plans . . .

In CANYS’ continuing effort to provide you with information and resources so your chamber can decide weather to take a position on Association Health Plans, here are some more documents for you to consider. Again, informal call notes from the CANYS’ member discussion with the U.S. Chamber are available by e-mailing maggie.moree@bcnys.org.

If these links don’t work for you, please reference http://www.canys.org/news.htm.

Survey of health insurers by market . . .

In discussing AHPs, it was noted that it would be very helpful to have facts and figures to help chambers take a position on AHPs. CANYS is interested to know the number of insurers operating in New York State, by market or region. Is there a lack of competition in your area? Please send a list of all available insurers in your area to maggie.moree@bcnys.org.

Greater Syracuse Chamber needs your voice for DestiNY . . .

The Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce is asking for your support for a bill giving legal certainty to Empire Zone benefits for DestiNY USA. To trigger this guarantee, DestiNY must invest $1 billion in construction and build 3.2 million square feet of commercial space before December of 2006. It will be one of the most exciting resort destinations in the nation, bringing 120,000+ jobs and millions of tourists to Upstate. It will be the largest economic development project in state history. 60+% of the economic benefits will be outside Onondaga County. Are you ready to see Upstate known far and wide for the unique and extensive inventory of attractions, environment and quality of life that all New Yorkers can enjoy?

Timing is critical - this bill needs to be passed before the Legislature breaks for the summer. For more information, or if you'd like to promote this e-advocacy effort to your membership, please contact Deb Warner, Program Director at dwarner@syracusechamber.com

MACNY needs your voice on CO2 . . .

The State Senate and State Assembly have both introduced legislation that regulates vehicle auto emission standards: A.4082 sponsored by Assemblyman DiNapoli and S.4044 sponsored by Senator Marcellino. These bills would require the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation to automatically adopt the emission standards that are set by the State of California. National environmental groups see California emission standards as a way to enact state-by-state the failed Kyoto Protocol (international treaty on global warming) standards across the United States.

The Manufacturers Association of Central New York opposes this legislation and hopes you can join them and send a letter in opposition to A.4082 and S.4044. To read the Business Council's legislative memo on A.4082, click here. For more information, please contact Chris Fish, MACNY's Director of Government Affairs at cfish@macny.org

Chamber of Commerce Week . . .

Mark your calendars for September 14-20, and get ready for Chamber Week 2003! Chambers of commerce across New York State will be sponsoring programs and events to highlight the important work that business people do to encourage growth in their communities. In the past, chambers have gotten proclamations about Chamber Week from their town boards, ran special edition inserts to the community newspaper about what the chamber does and the business people that make things happen, and much more. If you would like more information on how you can highlight the great work of your chamber during Chamber Week 2003, please contact maggie.moree@bcnys.org.

Fellow CANYS members: As many of you already know, I have left my position with the Greece Chamber of Commerce. There comes a time when it is appropriate to move on to other professional interests. The time I invested in CANYS was extremely important to me, and I appreciate the opportunity to have served on the CANYS Board. The people I have met across the state have all been a positive influence on me. Best Wishes to each and every one of you for much continued success in the Chamber world! Keep your chins up and your heads down, but keep up the good fight!
With Warmest Regards, Rich Vogelzang - Greece, NY
