CANYS luncheon at the Sagamore,September 19 . . .
Make sure you're signed up for the CANYS Luncheon in conjunction
with The Business Council's Annual Meeting! New York State Insurance
Superintendent Greg Serio will be the keynote speaker
at the CANYS Luncheon on Friday, September 19th at
the Sagamore in Bolton Landing. Many chambers have
requested a session with Mr. Serio, so here's your chance to get
the latest updates on sole proprietor health coverage, Association
Health Plans, workers' compensation, and any other issues on your
mind. You will also hear how chambers
can maximize the relationships and resources of their local educational
institutions, from SUNY administrators and your fellow chamber executives.
And you will have the chance to network with representatives from
ACCE and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
To accommodate anticipated programming, the CANYS Luncheon has expanded
by one hour, and will now be held from Noon – 3:00 p.m., Friday,
September 19th. Need another registration form? Click HERE.
New e-advocacy supports funding for career,
technical education . . .
The Business Council has launched a new electronic advocacy campaign
to convince Congress to renew a law that supports vocational and
technical career training for students and adults. The Carl D. Perkins
Vocational and Technical Education Act is up for reauthorization
in the fall of 2003. It's time to make sure Congress knows that
business values the federal government's investment in helping our
nation's youth and adults develop the technical skills necessary
for success in the workforce. If you would like to join thousands
of other businesses around the country in letting Congress know
that career technical education is a critical component of the total
education system, click HERE.

Chamber Week, September 14-20. . .
Don’t forget Chamber Week 2003, September 14-20. Chambers
of commerce across New York State will be sponsoring programs and
events to highlight the important work that business people do to
encourage growth in their communities. Need some suggestions for
events? The Otsego County Chamber is holding an event every day,
from an open house at Butternut Graphics Signs & Designs to
a Technology Forum with a speaker from the NYS Attorney General’s
office. In the past, chambers have gotten proclamations about Chamber
Week from their town boards, ran special edition inserts to the
community newspaper about what the chamber does and the business
people that make things happen, and much more. If you would like
more information on how you can highlight the great work of your
chamber during Chamber Week 2003, please contact maggie.moree@bcnys.org.
U.S. Chamber Eastern Region government affairs conference

The U.S. Chamber is bringing together CEOs and government affairs
staff from chambers of commerce throughout the Northeast for a two-day
conference that will focus exclusively on their involvement in state,
local, and federal government affairs. Geoff O’Hara and Sarah
Crawford have worked to secure provocative speakers and provide
for candid discussion at the meeting, scheduled for Thursday and
Friday, October 23-24, at the Wyndham Tremont Boston Hotel in Boston,
MA. This conference serves the states of Connecticut, Delaware,
Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York,
Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, so there should be no lack
of new and different ideas. To register, go to http://www.uschamber.com/events/031022registration

CANYS Membership Meeting and Day at the Races . . .
Special thanks to all 17 chambers who were represented at the first-ever
CANYS summer Membership Meeting! If you weren’t with us, you
missed: a sizzling barbeque smorgasbord cooked up by Izzy himself;
a beautiful twilight cruise on Lake George; a rousing membership
meeting, complete with a skit on “Who Moved My Cheese?”
starring two local chamber executives; and one of the few sunny
summer days at the Saratoga Race Track. Peter Aust of the Southern
Saratoga Chamber and Missy Millett of The Business Council deserve
huge thanks and praise for planning a wonderful event. Participants
had such a good time that the word has already spread and plans
are underway for next summer’s event, tentatively on the calendar
for June 14-15 in Central New York, and hosted by the Greater Fulton
Chamber of Commerce. Look for a group picture coming soon to http://www.canys.org/news.htm.
Tell us about it . . .

his talk. If any chambers know of a great speaker for less than
$5,000, please send your recommendation to me at PamL@chautauquachamber.org
An
anonymous chamber executive needs your help: Have you ever had
a board member that is a bit abrasive and degrading to other
members? If so, how have you handled it? E-mail your suggestions
